Art Behind Bars Exhibition of artworks done by the patients of the Specialist Prison Hospital in Belgrade

It is a group show consisting of artists without any formal education, who do not belong to the profession art scene, thus it can also be defined as a naive art show.

Marginal art was always considered a candid and honest method of sending some personal message, as it not burdened neither by dominant aestethical forms nor trends. In this case, art created by prisoners, registered psychoactive substances addicts is considered primarely Art Brut, a movement which started after the WWII with French artist Jean Dubuffet. But it goes further, as artists were always interested in marginal groups arts and crafts, even before the terminology was created. Such art was sometimes included in their projects as was the case with Der Blau Reiter art group (1911 – 1914), with Vasil Kandisky as a member.

Showcasing the selection of artworks created in the Specialist Prison Hospital in Belgrade, Art Behind Bars will be presenting results of the working art therapy held in the prison, in modest conditions, for convicts since 1969 as part of the rehabilitation process of psychiatric patients and substance abuse patients, who were given the theraphy by court orders.

The audience will be able to purchase artworks at the exhibition.

In addition we invite the audience for a good cause: the hospital's library needs books, so your donation will be kindly appreciated. Also donations in art supplies such as sculpting materials, drawing and painting tools and colors will help the therapy programme being more successful in the future.
The exhibition will be opened until 25 November, every day from 2 to 8 pm.
